Iraq - Explosion at Iraqi paramilitary headquarters kills one, injures four in Baghdad
Iraq · Baghdad, Baghdad Governorate
Situation overview
An explosion at the headquarters of Iraq's Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF) in Baghdad has killed one member of the paramilitary organization and injured four others, according to security and medical sources.
The incident occurred on Saturday at a facility belonging to the PMF, also known as Hashd al-Shaabi, Reuters reports.
According to a security official and a medical source, one member of the organization died in the explosion, while four others sustained injuries.
The Popular Mobilisation Forces confirmed that an explosion had occurred at the headquarters, attributing the incident to a stockpile of obsolete ammunition.
In a statement, the group said the ammunition explosion injured five people and triggered a fire at the facility.
The organization added that the blaze had subsequently been brought under control.
The PMF is an umbrella organization comprising predominantly Shiite paramilitary factions that have been formally incorporated into Iraq's state security forces.
The alliance includes several armed groups with close ties to Iran.
The PMF's statement did not report any fatalities, while security and medical sources confirmed one death and four injuries.
